Chemicals enter into tap water from many different sources. Pollution is the most common, with chemicals added to the water by public water systems close on its tail. The most common of these chemicals is chlorine, the most commonly used to treat public water supplies. It removes and kills any bacteria which could be living in the water.
While it is true that chemicals are added to a water source to purify the water, there are still some health risks. Over time, chlorine taken in small doses will increase the risk of cancer, heart disease and other health conditions. This brings about the question; is tap water really that good for us to drink? The government regulates the processing of drinking water through the EPA and FDA and are aware that dangerous chemicals might still be present in the processed drinking water. Although there are standards in place indicating the maximum amount of contaminants allowed in drinking water, none of these levels are at zero, meaning that there are still dangerous contaminants present in our tap water. Take a look at this short list of chemicals present in your drinking water:
1.Chlorine can cause bladder and rectal cancers, asthma and as recently proved by scientist, breast cancer.
2.Lead entering tap water through corroded pipes. This can be harmful for pregnant mothers and small children. Lead poisoning causes learning disorders and severe developmental delays.
3.Giardia and Cryptosporidium these are types of protozoa and are responsible for widespread outbreaks of gastro-intestinal diseases. They normally find their way into your drinking water when there has been a sanitation breakdown.
So what can be done to ensure your tap water is safe for drinking? Well, firstly you can switch to bottled water, which is a fantastic alternative, but is unfortunately also a costly one. This is also not a fool-proof option as the plastic used to make the bottles also contain chemicals. Your best option would be to boil your water and save it in (clean) containers in your fridge, or to install a carbon filter water purification system. This is the best way to remove chemicals and purify drinking water as it removes nearly 100% of the toxins and leaves your water with only healthy minerals.
